To be fair, the truck had its turn indicator on. The onus would be on the biker to be cautious when approaching the truck from behind.

In the biker safety course I took they tell you to LOOK AT THE WHEELS of the vehicle, because they move TWICE as fast as the vehicle does, and therefore are more obvious indicators of what's going on.  If the guy saw the blinker, he should have been expecting something to happen!
