Two Bikers Hit by Falling Rock, One Meter in Diameter
Two motorcyclists were hit by rockfalls on the Zhongbu Cross-Island Road in Taroko National Park this morning, and one was injured. A 46-year-old man named Liu and a 44-year-old friend named Huang were traveling from Kaohsiung to Hualien City on a heavy motorcycle when they were hit by a falling rock that was one meter in diameter. Around 10:30 am at Chim Bridge in Taroko Gorge. Liu hit one of the big rocks which caused a fracture of his right femur. Huang was also knocked off the bike, but he was not seriously injured and did not need treatment. Liu was taken to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, where he was told that his condition was stable and not life-threatening. Currently, the staff of the Taro Public Works Division of the Maintenance Technology Office is cleaning up the rockfall road, and the technician is investigating the slope of the road using a drone, and we will continue to monitor changes in the terrain. The Office of Public Works said rain that was consistent with last week’s heavy rains may have caused rockfalls and urged the public to pay attention to road conditions when driving on mountain roads. |
