Tsunami Roller Coaster Derails in Motherwell, Scotland, June 26, 2016
The Tsunami roller coaster derailed at M&D's theme park in Motherwell, Scotland, on June 26, 2016, injuring riders, including children. Reported injury totals ranged from nine to 11. Police said five cars detached on a bend, struck the ride's structure and fell about 20 feet. The derailed cars came to rest beneath the steel track near the station platform. Staff and bystanders helped riders beside the wreckage, and a detached wheel assembly lay on the paving nearby. A court later heard that poor axle repairs using incompatible weld metal had caused the crash. M&D's pleaded guilty to a health and safety breach and was fined £65,000 in March 2019. The ride never reopened and was dismantled. |
