The impact with the train crushed the fuel tank on the truck causing the diesel to become super-heated and kaboom. A diesel fire like that is far worse than a petrol/gasoline fire as diesel contains much more embodied energy. But I doubt the truck driver knew anything about that, the impact was right into the driver's side of the cab so they probably died instantly from massive blunt force injuries to the head and left side of the chest. The fire was just adding insult to injury. I can't imagine there was much left of the driver to autopsy or bury. It certainly won't have been an open casket funeral, but they won't have needed a cremation either, just a trip through the crusher. It's unbelievable that a so-called professional driver would do that, there was absolutely no chance at all they were going to make it across in front of that train with the speed it was carrying. I really do wonder if it was deliberate, i.e. suicide by train. If it's not then I find it profoundly worrying that careless idiots like this are driving these heavy and extremely solid vehicles over long distances right across Europe... |
