Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
These runaway truck ramps are placed on steep roads so if trucks have brake problems they can stop in them. It's pretty much a last resort option, but better than flying off the side of a mountain. All the ones I have seen have a better layout. They are supposed to look like a ramp so you are actually slowed down. That one looked washed out from poor weather and not maintained properly.

so in this picture i attached, is that long uphill the run away ramp? and if so wont that mean that the trucks with brake problems will just roll backwards down the ramp?

Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
maybe you could use your parking brake before you roll backwards? i dont think that the gravel was ever intended to look like it was in the video. my guess was that some kids built it up into jumps to ride their bikes off. |

Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
no need for brakes they are usually made of sand or gravel and are made so that the truck essentially sinks in and gets stuck....although the one in the vid is obviously messed up and not working right

But seriously that's just plain stupid though. I mean how is ramp supposed to prevent crashes? Some engineers has been way off here. Great share; thanks.

Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
The run away truck ramps are for trucks that have lost their brakes or for whatever reason can't stop. The ramps I've seen go up a steep hill and have lots of loose gravel with a pile of gravel at the end of the ramp. I've never seen one used but the groves from truck tires are there to show they have been used. The truck sinks into the loose gravel and grinds to a halt, usually long before the pile at the end. In the mountains runaway truck ramps are generally placed every mile or so while on a steep grade to avoid trucks from flying off the end of corners, into traffic or off cliffs.

Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
Then how come this people who set-up a camera didn't reported that there is an un-even ramp for runaway trucks? As he knows for himself that it can cause a major accident and can kill people. All he was done there was set-up his camera, records all the incidents that might happen there and choose among the best accidents happened for the money. What a job.... ![]() |

Re: Truck SafetyRamp in Pennsylvania is designed to cause crashes
I'd say that runaway ramp did its job. That box truck's brakes had failed and he drove into the ramp to stop. The gravel sure stopped him. ![]() |
