Poland. A 67-year-old local man driving a farm tractor pulling one or two agricultural trailers entered the crossing while the barriers were lowering. He broke through a barrier and stopped on the tracks. A passenger train operated by Intercity (carrying 500 passengers) then struck the tractor, especially the trailer(s).

The trailer was loaded with straw. The impact heavily damaged the front of the locomotive and smashed the trailer, scattering debris, but there were no serious injuries. The tractor driver and all passengers were unharmed.

Fun fact. The lead singer for ELO was killed by one of these bales, that rolled down a hill and landed on top of his car as he was driving past a farm in England. I think they weigh about 1 and a half tons.

A regular hay bale weighs about 96 lbs.

The ELO singer weighed 165 lbs. I don't know what that is in British Stones, or Swedish Vlardmens.

So why did he stop. The tractor could have easily ripped out the crossing arms and they would have been cheaper than a train wreck.

Yep. What a complete dummy. Just keep moving forward just a few more feet and completely avoid being hit by the train. Who cares about the barrier that fell to the hay.

William May You’re talking about Mike Edwards, he was a cellist in the bands early days. The lead singer still is Jeff Lynne who has very much not been crushed by hay bales up to this point.

165 pounds is 11.79 Stone.
I am not knowing what a Vlardmen is, though. I never heard my grandparents or cousins use the word. It's probably some obscure item at IKEA.

I think a Vlardman is the tray that holds the Swedish Meatballs at the restaurant in IKEA in Phoenix, Arizona. I don't know what it weighs, though. Or how to convert IT'S weight into Swedish dipthongs.

If you go to the "Fail Videos" section here, there is what I am sure is a true and authentic episode of a documentary from Switzerland, in the entry labeled "Quackology". I assume it is from National Geographic, who regularly present deeply researched shows on many scientific subjects and foreign countries.

Those, and episodes of "Futurama", are where I get most of my scientific information. It's like a VIEW INTO THE FUTURE!
