Tractor Trailer Slams into Thruway Overpass in South Nyack
Video captures the moment a tractor trailer smashed into an overpass on I-87 in Rockland County, New York, on Monday. It happened at 12:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the New York State Thruway in South Nyack. The moment of impact was captured on dashcam video of a AAA Carting truck. The video shows a spray of debris flying as the truck struck the overpass, tipped over and skidded on its side. The tractor trailer continue to slide on the pavement after it toppled over. State police say it struck a Toyota parked on the right shoulder. The Toyota's driver was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured. The truck driver, Pernell Harris of York, South Carolina, reported no injuries, but he was ticketed for having a vehicle that exceeded the maximum height being 13 feet, 6 inches. It's not the first incident of its kind at the bridge. Back in August 2023, the bridge was hit by a truck, which prompted the closure of some Thruway lanes to be closed while repair work was completed. "It's unbelievable! I can't believe this happened a second time," Nyack resident Patrick Kelly said. The Thruway Authority said this bridge suffered only minor damage in Monday's crash and was not compromised. It is scheduled to be replaced sometime after 2029, officials said. |
