Tractor-trailer Hauling Scrap Metal Overturns on the Tappan Zee Bridge
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. A tractor-trailer hauling scrap metal overturned Friday morning on the Tappan Zee Bridge, snarling traffic for a time in both directions. The crash happened around 9 a.m. on the northbound side of the bridge. It’s unclear what caused the truck to lose control. Images from the scene showed the overturned truck with pieces of scrap metal and debris all over the roadway. Video showed the truck sending debris and two wheels flying across the road. Police said all lanes on the bridge were closed for some time after the accident. The driver of the truck was not hurt. The New York State Thruway Authority said there were no lanes closed before the accident, and there was no construction going on at the time. |

Looks like he lost a set of wheels on the trailer, and things went downhill from there. At least the guy in the truck next to him was smart enough to slow down and get out of the way.

Re: Tractor-trailer Hauling Scrap Metal Overturns on the Tappan Zee Bridge
I've drove a truck for over 12 yrs. An axle doesn't just detach itself as you're going down the road. If it was the cause, it would have broken on 1 side then the other & would have cork screwed down the road. This axle stayed fairly straight. I thought perhaps both tires on the front trailer axle may have blown, but there is no tread shrapnel being thrown. I've got to believe the load shifted to the side of the trailer. |
