Teens Racing on the Highway in Stolen Cars Cause Rollover Crash
Footage shows a horrific crash involving allegedly stolen cars racing on the Bruce Highway near Townsville which left elderly people fighting for life has been released. The horror crash took place last month on December 22 about 5.45am. Police allege two groups of people were racing on the highway when one vehicle overtook a truck and then a car with elderly people inside. A second stolen car, attempting to do the same, swerved to avoid an oncoming truck and rammed into the back of the victim’s car causing a tremendous collision. Dash cam footage from a following truck caught the moment the terrible crash took place. The force of the collision pushed the victim’s car onto the other side of the highway and into a ditch. It then rolled at least seven times. The footage then shows the first stolen car return to the scene of the crash. The driver picked up the other offenders and left the scene without assisting the victims, police allege. Detective Inspector Leonie Steyger said at the time the crash an “inexcusable event”. “Unfortunately due to their injuries inflicted by the alleged offenders they may never enjoy the quality of life again that they have previously,” she soon after the crash. A 69-year-old woman and 72-year-old man were discharged from hospital about a week later. The Bulletin understands a 70-year-old man had more serious injuries and was discharged at a later date. Police have charged two 16-year-old boys who were driving a stolen Mitsubishi. |
