Teenage British F4 Racing Driver Billy Monger Loses Both Lower Legs After Crash
A 17-year-old Formula 4 driver has had both of his legs amputated after "one of the most horrific crashes motorsport has ever seen". Billy Monger was left in a critical condition after the crash with a fellow racer's car at Donington Park, Derbyshire, on Sunday. He was trapped in his vehicle for more than 90 minutes following the high-speed smash, before he was flown to hospital. Doctors at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham have kept the teenager in an induced coma and he is expected to be woken up in a few days, according to a Formula 4 statement. It added: "The medical team there are pleased that all Billy's vital signs are showing progress and going in the right direction. "Due to the injuries sustained and despite every effort, Billy has sadly had both lower legs amputated. "Billy's family would like to express their gratitude for the first-class medical attention given by Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and take this opportunity to thank the medical teams, marshals, extrication crews and air ambulance staff for their skilled response and hard work. "Furthermore, they would like to thank Billy's colleagues, friends, fans and everyone who has demonstrated their affection for him over the past few days. "These messages help give the great strength needed for the recovery process that lies ahead." Billy, who refers to himself on Twitter as Billy The Whizz, writes on his website that he has been crowned British Champion twice but "for 2017 it's my time to become the British F4 Champion". A JustGiving crowdfunding page has been set up to help Billy, from Charlwood, Surrey, beat "life changing injuries" after what it described as "one of the most horrific crashes motorsport has ever seen". It has already raised more than £500,000 - well over its £260,000 target. |

Re: Teenage British F4 Racing Driver Billy Monger Loses Both Lower Legs After Crash
It pretty much was. The footage doesn't show enough to tell whether Patrik Pasma (the driver of the other car) had suffered a mechanical failure or was recovering from a spin but his car was travelling at a very low speed. Unfortunately, Billy was driving the last of a group of cars which meant that when the slow car became visible to him he had the least distance to react and the greatest speed, something over 80mph more than Pasma's car at impact. Not long ago a crash like that would have been instantly fatal, it is a sign of how far safety has come in motor racing that this one wasn't...

Re: Teenage British F4 Racing Driver Billy Monger Loses Both Lower Legs After Crash
Not necessarily, although he has lost his right leg below the knee and his left leg mid-thigh the reports are he is out of his coma, aware of his injuries and accepted them very well, and is working out how to drive with a hand-operated clutch. Like the Italian driver Alex Zanardi who lost both lower legs in a CART crash, I'm sure Billy will be back in a racing car and just as fast as ever...
