Suspected DUI Driver Crashes into Family Headed to Church
Greenville County deputies released new information Monday about a chase and crash that sent a family of four to the hospital on their way to church Sunday. Devonte Williams, 23, appeared in a wheelchair during a Monday bond hearing. Williams was denied bond. He is charged with four counts of felony DUI and four counts of failure to stop with great bodily injury. Lt. Ryan Flood said deputies got a call for service about 10 a.m. at the Spinx gas station, at 619 Rutherford Street. The call was in reference to a person passed out at the wheel. As deputies were responding, they got an update that the driver, who was believed to be impaired, drove off and was being followed by a concerned citizen. A deputy spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Buncombe and Shaw Street, Flood said. The deputy noticed the operator of the vehicle was driving erratically and appeared to be driving impaired, according to Flood. The deputy initiated a traffic stop, but the driver failed to stop, Flood said. After a brief vehicle pursuit, the driver, identified as 23 year-old Devonte Rakwon Williams, crashed into another vehicle, which has the family inside, at the intersection of Highway 183 and Highway 253, Flood said. Deputies said the family was on the way to church. The crash was caught on surveillance video from Energy Market convenience store. |
