Suitcase Tumbling Down Escalator Mows Down Woman

A woman in China has been injured by a tumbling suitcase that was pushed from the top of an escalator by another member of the public.

According to Chinese media outlet NetEase, the incident occurred at around 5pm on Monday at Hangzhou railway station.

The footage was captured on CCTV and shows two women about to step onto the escalator.

Instead of holding their suitcases next to them on the steps, they make the bizarre decision to send the cases down first.

The younger woman, accompanied by an older woman, put a black-coloured suitcase on the moving escalator and let it go.

The video then cuts to CCTV at the bottom of the stairs and shows a woman in a white t-shirt going down the escalator as normal. Suddenly she appears to hear a sound so turns around and spots the suitcase falling towards her.

The woman quickens her pace and tries to flee the escalator, but she is not quick enough and is pummelled by the suitcase and thrown to the ground.

Suddenly emergency services arrive and the woman is placed on a stretcher.

In a statement issued on Friday, Hangzhou Metro said the woman had been taken to the hospital very quickly and despite the extreme pain in her lower back, is in a stable condition currently.

The woman who let go of the luggage was said to be a fresher (in her first year) at a university who was about to start the new term.

She and her family have apologised to the injured commuter.
