She shouldn't have taken her little girl to the store if she was running a fever.
Well, maybe; but kids are notorious for spiking sudden fevers. Their brains aren't yet so well developed to be very good at regulating functions like that. That's one reason why parents have been known to stay up all night w a sick kid; or to check on a well kid in the middle of the night -- monitor their temps.

Again, its not always fair to jump to blame the parents (especially the moms -- for example, who's to say it wasn't the dad's idea to drag the toddler out to the store?) -- even when parents are present, good, and doing their best, life happens. Sometimes lucky, sometimes sad.
