school bus crash on Monday afternoon sent at least three Miami Trace Elementary kids to Fayette County Memorial Hospital, according to authorities, and all injuries were considered minor.
At 4:16 p.m., the school bus, which was transporting approximately 55 children home from school, was heading northbound on State Route 38 toward Bloomingburg when the driver, Corky Cowdery, reportedly veered to the right too far while going around what is known as "Sheley's curve."
The bus hit the downward-sloping edge of the road, tipping it and it rolled over onto its right side in the ditch.
"The bus apparently went too far to the right and it was very soft ground," said Miami Trace Superintendent Dan Roberts. "There was a very steep embankment and she couldn't keep control of the bus."
Because the front passenger door was pinned against the ground, the only exit the students could use to get out of the bus was the emergency back door. As soon as the bus came to rest on its side, three upper class
Laurel Oaks students who Roberts described as "heroic," sprung into action to assist the elementary kids.
