Went down a rabbit hole reading about Russell Phillips and came across this picture of the aftermath of his wreck. You can see his left arm pointing up out of the wreckage and the rest of what is left of his body in the seat of the car.

“Upon striking the catch fence, the Oldsmobile’s roof had been sheared off, and Russell had been savagely decapitated and dismembered by a caution light which had easily pierced the collapsing windshield. Several items had gotten stuck in the catch fence itself, including the car’s window net and, most horrifyingly, Russell’s right hand, still in its glove.”

A year later they installed the Earnhardt Bar and Newman Bar, which are both safety features in NASCAR race cars, named after the drivers Dale Earnhardt and Ryan Newman, respectively, who were involved in accidents where these features likely played a role in preventing serious injury.

The Earnhardt Bar is a vertical brace in the center of the windshield, added after Earnhardt's 1996 Talladega crash where a car's nose broke his sternum.

The Newman Bar is a reinforced section of the roll cage, added after Newman's Daytona 500 crash where his car flipped and landed on its roof.

It was the last time Charlotte Motor Speedway hosted the Sportsman Division. They took it off their racing schedule in November after this happened in October.
