Ruptured Propane Cylinders Explode and Causing Fire on Roof of Toronto Building

Fire crews successfully extinguished a dramatic two-alarm blaze that erupted on the roof of a building under construction in the city's Entertainment District on Friday evening.

The incident, characterized by bangs and fireballs, resulted in no reported injuries.

The emergency began shortly after 6:00 p.m. at 296 Richmond Street West, near John Street.

Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke billowing from the six-storey commercial building, followed by at least two massive explosions that rattled windows in adjacent restaurants.

Toronto Fire Services (TFS) confirmed that the blasts were caused by three propane cylinders that ruptured due to the heat of the rooftop fire.

Firefighters arriving on the scene within 90 seconds were forced to act aggressively to protect several other cylinders remaining on the roof.

By 8:30 p.m., the fire was fully extinguished, and all roads and sidewalks were reopened to the public.

TFS Deputy Chief Paul Fitzgerald stated that while construction was ongoing at the site, no one was believed to be on the roof at the time the fire started.

An official investigation is now underway to determine the exact cause and origin of the blaze.
