Running Down Protesters in the Road
The Regional Prosecutor's Office of the Panamanian province of Chiriquí is investigating the case as a crime for alleged attempted murder. The National Police of Panama captured on Saturday the drivers of five cargo trucks that ran over several protesters in the province of Chiriquí. "In a quick police action, we retained 5 vehicles allegedly involved in an attack on a citizen who participated in the road closure in Horconcitos," the police authority stated. The vehicles crossed a road that the protesters had closed since Friday due to the ineffectiveness of the dialogue with the Government. Videos of the incident circulated on social networks as evidence that the truck drivers accelerated their pace on the blocked path and despite the claims of the rest of the protesters, they did not stop. After the arrest, the Public Ministry reported: "the Chiriquí Regional Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation ex officio, for the alleged commission of the crime of attempted homicide, for events that occurred this morning in Horconcitos, to the detriment of several people." Similar demonstrations and road closures have been reported in some towns in Chiriquí such as El Salado, San Félix, Horconcitos and Tolé, starting last Saturday morning as part of the national strike extended for more than 15 days in the country due to gas/fuel and food shortages. |
