The problem with drivers in general is that after gaining too much muscle memory, then confidence gets to their heads so they all think they are professional drivers and they start driving more shitty, paying less attention to what they should be caring for and driving faster than 10 over the limit. They start not using turn signals and getting infront of normal moving vehicles feeling dominate, they don't check blind spots, they are not careful passing through intersections and give less of a shit about pedestrians. Etc etc..

A lot of the time its the pedestrians fault too. They just walk through the street and don't even bother checking to their sides. Other times they just get unlucky when it's the drivers fault

Traffic deaths continue to increase in Russia with 28000 lives lost on the country’s roads in traffic accidents during 2012.

Road traffic accident statistics were released last week for Russia with the country’s traffic police stating that a 0.1% increase in fatalities had been reported bringing the total for the year to 27953 victims. Reported accidents grew in total by 1.9% to over 203000 in which those recorded as receiving treatable injuries grew by 2.7% to over a quarter of a million people.

In breaking down the causes of accidents, the Russian authorities cited the state of roads as being the largest single factor leaving nearly 7000 dead and over 54000 people injured. The unsatisfactory condition of Russia’s roads was stated as the reason for nearly 43000 reported traffic accidents in the country which has a poor reputation for highway maintenance, quality of road signs and absence of road markings particularly around pedestrian crossings. Despite Government programmes to improve road conditions through road building projects and new layouts for pedestrian crossings, the death toll resulting from poor roads grew by 1.8% in 2012.

Drink driving statistics were also provided showing that nearly 13000 accidents were caused by drivers who were intoxicated and that 2100 lives were lost and 18500 people were injured. The death toll was the same as in 2011 but injuries increased by 4.4%.

Deaths and injuries of pedestrians were not released in the figures but one statistic which reflects the need for a shift in attitudes towards road safety in Russia stated that pedestrians were blamed as the cause of 28500 road accidents in which 5000 people died and 25000 were injured. Pedestrian blame reduced this year by over 8%.

A country that blames pedestrians for more than twice as many accidents as drunk drivers needs to have a detailed examination of the validity of its statistics, its attitudes towards vulnerable road users and the depth to which it investigates the underlying causes of road traffic accidents.

The statistics released by the Russian traffic police are not backed up by any detailed conditions, assumptions or information about how they were gathered.

No detail has been given about the level of seriousness of injuries received or the outcome and if some of the reported injuries at the time of the accident turned out to be fatal, it wouldn’t be clear whether they’re recorded as injuries or deaths in the statistics.
