Structurally, the ped bridge looks like a pair of 18" deep I-beams or C-channels spanning the ravine just below the floor deck. The rails and netting above deck are solely to keep people from falling off. The structural steel was probably never painted and rotting out for decades. Rush hour = peak load = time to fail.  |

The way it bowed down in the center, the failure occurred in the center of the span, so it was a beam failure not a support wall failure.
