New Zealand Biker Close Call with a Van Towing a Trailer

The incident took place on Tuesday at Invercargill at the bottom of New Zealand’s South Island.

Video shows the rider failing to recognise an approaching intersection. When he applies the brakes, the motorbike skids and tosses him onto the road.

As he slides across the intersection, he narrowly misses being run over by a speeding van towing a trailer.

The rider was not injured but his motorbike was towed from the scene.

Resident Peter Van Der Schuit, whose security cameras captured the heart-stopping moment, told it made for “good entertainment”.

Police did not speak to the motorcyclist, who left shortly after the crash.

Resident Donelda Bowman said the rider was “back at the bike trying to pick it up” by the time she went to see what the noise was about.

“There was bits and pieces everywhere. You can see all these scratch marks on the road.”

Is it just me or is there something in the road that makes him skid? That white thing, whatever it is.

Re: New Zealand Biker Close Call with a Van Towing a Trailer

I'm from NZ and the white thing will just be a newly painted road marking saying 'slow' or 'stop'. It could well have contributed to the skid because the paint used in markings here is extremely thick, and dries very smooth- And because our roads and terrain are brutal, our tyres are made to deal with that. Then when someone hits greasy asphalt or in this case, the paint, the tyres just have no grip whatsoever.

I doubt the paint is much of an issue for cars since there are four tyres, and a much bigger spread to them, but I can definitely see how a wee moped or even motorbike could come acropper!

Yes paint on roads is a common danger for bikers especially in wet conditions or when oil is on the road

Was he going a bit too fast any way? It also seems like that intersection is a T...did he lose control even earlier? Couldnt slow down?

Re: New Zealand Biker Close Call with a Van Towing a Trailer

I believe he realized his best chance was to lay the bike down, but it didn't work as planned. Perhaps a tire caught a pot hole or crack, something made it flip back up. Prob for the best since if he had laid it down, he'd have been under the van.
