In a residential complex under the Gujarat Housing Board when V. P, a resident of the 9th floor, was stepping out of the elevator onto the ground floor, the elevator suddenly shot upward at high speed while the doors were still wide open.

Footage shows him having already placed one foot into the lobby when the lift jerked. He reacted fast hurling his body forward into the lobby just as the rising elevator floor reached the top of the doorway, narrowly avoiding being crushed.

He sustained internal injuries and a minor head injury from the force of the movement and striking the hoistway entrance. He was rushed to a local hospital and later declared out of danger.

Preliminary findings by technicians indicated a drive-related fault that allowed the elevator to move despite the doors remaining open.

The specific elevator was taken out of service and authorities ordered a safety audit of all 36 elevators within the 18-building Sardar Heights campus.

The incident has sparked a major debate regarding the maintenance of aging infrastructure in India and the lack of strict elevator safety regulations in many regions.

There's a red light flashing on the button console... probably couldn't mean anything GOOD (though admittedly it might not even be elevator-operationally-related), but it looks like his arm was in the way as he stood there so he couldn't see it.

I was wondering about that too. I watched it again & that was the floor that he pressed.

Poor guy, he must have felt let down.

Sounds like residents in that complex were exposed to elevated risk.

Hopefully the safety audit will lift the compliance rate.
