Motorized Paraglider Going 48mph Flips Over and Smashes into the Texas Desert
Anthony Vella, 33, was testing a BGD Luna 3 in the Enchanted Rock State Park northwest of Austin, when it suddenly collapsed 85 to 100ft in the air. He ended up in a hospital bed where he is being treated for a fractured neck, back, and pelvis and a shattered right arm. He explained that the crash was due to him missing a small pension knot during his checks before taking off. Applying brakes to a fully accelerated glider collapses it, and a tension knot snagging has the same effect. Vella showed the crash as he fell to Earth and immediately screamed in pain from his serious injuries. ''Help me please, I crashed my flying machine,' he told a dispatcher after desperately asking Siri to call 911. A Good Samaritan arrived within two minutes of the crash and his friend two minutes later, who pulled the paramotor off him. The first one later explained they were working nearby and said he saw him fall out of the sky and ran over after calling an ambulance. However, they mostly spoke Spanish so Vella had to keep talking to dispatcher between screams of pain. 'Oh fuck my arm is totally snapped,' he said after examining himself. |
