It’s not condensation, the rope is wet. You can see it wringing the water out as soon as it goes tight.

Who engineered that capstan installation?!?!? Either that or they didn't know how to use it. Capstans are designed for STRAIGHT LINE USE, NOT around corners. And you stand BEHIND the shield when you have a heavy load. A lot of them have shields that raise hydraulically, to shield the operators. These guys are hauling sideways, with no shield at all. I wonder if the capstan would only work in one direction, so they had to rig it up backwards, and run it in reverse? No matter what - Darwin. |

One of the biggest fears when line-handling is synthetic snapback.. In Navy bootcamp they emphasize the hazards and show the videos of sailors having their legs literally removed from a mooring line.. Good training video here.. Looks like line got caught/binded up at the end of the capstain and released under pressure hurling the bitter end toward the victim that was in the line of danger btw..  Poor design.. There should have been a shield in place, but the safety of the deck personnel is not of any importance till it's too late and addressed after the fact |
