Mobile Crane Slamming into Multiple Vehicles

China. On the afternoon of November 20, a traffic accident occurred in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province.

According to video footage, a white crane sped across an intersection, colliding with multiple vehicles and injuring 13 people at the scene.

The injured were immediately sent to the hospital for treatment, among whom 3 sustained serious injuries but are not in life-threatening condition.

The report also stated that the public security authorities quickly launched an operation, and the driver, Jia (male, 30 years old), has been apprehended.

Preliminary investigation and examination indicate that the accident was caused by a malfunction in the vehicle's braking system.

Drunk driving and drug driving have been ruled out, and blood samples have been sent for retesting.

Currently, the affected section of the road has been reopened to traffic, and the accident investigation and follow-up work are proceeding at full speed.

Mr. Tong, a veteran who works at a local ski resort, was stopped at a red light when the mobile crane that caused the accident brushed past him.

After the accident, Mr. Tong and other drivers rushed to check the damaged vehicles and rescued a woman, but several other injured people were trapped inside. Lacking specialized tools, they could only wait for firefighters and paramedics to arrive.

Mr. Tong told that he was driving in the left lane at the time of the accident, and the traffic light at the T-junction ahead was red before the accident.

The accident occurred on the outskirts of Chongli city. At the time, he and the vehicle involved in the accident were traveling on a national highway with three lanes: "one for right turns and two for straight traffic."

It was already past rush hour and dark, and many vehicles had gathered at the intersection. There were about ten cars waiting in front of Mr. Tong.

Afterwards, he was a little scared, "I was thinking about whether to move into the middle lane, but then I thought, no rush. If I had moved, I might have been the first car to be hit."

Mr. Tong recalled that when the crane that caused the accident passed through the middle straight lane on his right, he was thinking, "The braking distance is not enough, I'm doomed, I'm going to crash." Then, the crane hit the first car on his right front with a "bang", and then hit several other cars in succession.

Mr. Tong said that at the time, he was only thinking about "saving lives was the most important thing," and many other drivers went with him to check.

They found two women and one man in a white Toyota. "The driver was a man, and there were two women in the back seat."

Mr. Tong and the others worked together to pry open the deformed car door and tried to rescue the people. At the time, two people were unconscious, but they were stuck in the deformed car body.

We shook the shoulders of the two unconscious people and kept shouting, ‘Don’t sleep, wake up,’ but they didn’t move. They rescued the conscious woman and took her to the roadside. Mr. Tong left only after the fire department and ambulance arrived.

In addition, there were three or four injured people who were rescued by others at the accident site.

"One of them had blood on his face and was frightened. He asked someone to call his family for him."

Later, they saw other severely damaged vehicles that were beyond repair and had to be handed over to the fire department. Mr. Tong regretted, "If only I had the tools with me at the time."

A netizen contacted Mr. Tong through Douyin, saying that she was the injured woman's daughter and said, "Thank you so much for saving my mother.

My mother is not in danger, but she has multiple rib fractures. Another aunt also had fractures and a slight brain hemorrhage. Thank you, you are our family's savior."

The accident occurred on a section of the connecting road of Provincial Highway S231, which is surrounded by nine ski resorts.

Mr. Tong told that when the ski resort manager contacted him that evening to inquire about the rescue, he learned that there were three of his colleagues in a car at the time.

At the accident scene, he saw some tourists. "Among the surrounding ski resorts, there's only one road down the mountain to get home. The tourists and we take the same route back and forth." Mr. Tong also saw that some of the injured were colleagues from other ski resorts.

According to Mr. Tong's visual estimate, the crane slid forward for about 1 kilometer after the collision. "Later, in order to avoid a car, it changed to the opposite lane and then overturned."
