Crash victims cleared of serious injury at Queensland Raceway

Two spectators have been cleared of serious injury after being struck by a car that flipped into the crowd during a V8 Supercars support race at Ipswich, west of Brisbane, today.
Two men - aged 59 and 60 - were taken to hospital after driver Kain Magro’s vehicle cartwheeled over a protective barrier at turn six of the Queensland Raceway circuit during race one of the Mini Challenge series.
The 60-year-old man suffered head lacerations and a shoulder injury while the 59-year-old was treated for head cuts.
A Department of Community Safety spokesperson said the two spectators were in a stable condition and had been cleared of serious injury.
Magro, 22, from north Queensland, was treated for neck pain and received precautionary tests at the hospital but was later released.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport will investigate the incident.
Magro’s brother John - who was also competing in the Mini Challenge series race - said his sibling wanted to get back behind the wheel as soon as possible.
‘‘I saw him in the medical room straight after (the accident) and he was shaking for sure,’’ John Magro told AAP.
‘‘But he is fine. He wants to get back behind the wheel as soon as he can.
‘‘We try to make the sport as safe as possible but unfortunately these things can happen.’’
Kain Magro is a Mareeba fruit farmer who has eight years racing experience - but he is contesting the Mini Challenge series for the first time.
He is a former state speedway champion.
A V8 Supercars spokesman said emergency crews were ‘‘on site within minutes’’ of the crash along with medical staff and police.
‘‘Both (spectators) were conscious whilst being treated at the scene,’’ he said.
‘‘There were no other reported injuries (to spectators).’’
Racing was delayed for almost an hour by the accident.
‘‘Of course, it’s very serious when something like this happens,’’ Ipswich Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood told ABC Radio.
‘‘But everybody acted in a well-organised manner and the matter was dealt with quite effectively and efficiently.’’
Ipswich is hosting the fifth round of the V8 Supercars series.
