Mechanic Run Over by Tractor He's Inspecting

Brazil, A 60-year-old mechanic survived after being run over by a tractor. He started the engine to see if it was working, he moved the lever because he thought it was all right, the tractor then started to move and ran him over.

After two hours of observation in the local Hospital he was released as the doctor told that there was apparently no fracture but that it was necessary to consult with a specialist. The next day an X-ray of the chest and shoulder was done, but nothing was detected.

When his son took him to a different Hospital a doc found out he had a fractured bone in his foot so it was casted.

Mechanic works at that garage for 30 years.

Re: Mechanic Run Over by Tractor He's Inspecting

That tractor looks to weigh about half the size of mine (1968 John Deere 4020 Diesel... 3.5-4 tons and up.)

The rear tires have bigger contact-patches for traction, but they also spread weight better on non-paved surfaces. That may have saved his life with this tractor, but I know at least two people who were killed by my-size tractor doing the very same thing.

You are right. I have seen several people in similar tractor accidents. We once had an employee on our Rice farm and he walked behind the tractor to take a piss. He did not have the brake set and it gravity caused the gear shifter to engage 2 gear. He was luicky that the field was very wet and those big tires smashed him into the ground. My dad had to dig him out with a shovel. Now, I saw a man get run over by a D7 Cat track layer and we had to scoup up is brains with a spatula.

This happens more than you think. I had a friend in high school that fell off a D8 and crushed his head.

I remember when I bought that 4020 diesel tractor, being my first, when they told me it had 96hp, I thought it was to the rear wheels. "Nope, that's 96hp to the PTO [Power Take-Off]", they replied. "So what's the HP to the rear wheels?", I asked. They just shrugged and said, "Don't know... they don't measure that." A 440-cubic-inch inline 6-cylinder...shudder.

So what that means is that, if you're unlucky enough to fall upon an unshielded PTO shaft running at either 540rpm/720rpm, you'll have 96hp trying to turn you into rolled flesh-paper within seconds. God only knows what will happen beneath the rear wheels, but it'll likely look better than a PTO-shaft entanglement.

Tractor tires run at about 10-20psi depending on application, this is to spread the load to not sink in mud or w/e on a farm.

The amount of pressure exerted onto a person is the same as the tire pressure (on a flat surface with contact). The videos of semi trucks with 100psi running over people are very messy.
