McDonald’s Employee Falling into an Open Bucket of Boiling Oil

Quote:
Footage of a young McDonald’s employee suffering horrific burns after falling into an open bucket of boiling oil has been made public after a magistrate today imposed a $45,000 fine on the store.

Angela Buza, a shift manager at the fast food chain’s Warragul store, was in hospital for several days after being drenched in several litres of 160C oil drained from a deep fryer.

Ms Buza said she suffered severe pain, and became anxious and socially withdrawn after being doused in the dangerous liquid, requiring skin grafts on her arms and legs.

“At times I still have nightmares of the incident,” Ms Buza wrote in a victim impact statement read out in court.

“The incident took away my independence as I became reliant on others.

“Due to becoming withdrawn, I lost friends.”

A McDonald's franchise owner has been ordered to pay fines and costs of $65,000 over an accident that left an employee with third-degree burns.

Angela Buza, 21, was injured when she slipped and fell in hot oil at work in a McDonald's story in Warragul, in eastern Victoria, in November 2013.

The Latrobe Magistrates Court was shown a video of another employee decanting oil from a deep fryer into buckets, before Ms Buza slipped.

She needed several skin grafts as a result of the burns and in her victim impact statement said she still suffered anxiety attacks.

In sentencing, Magistrate Fiona Hayes said Ms Buza's injuries would continue to have lasting physical, emotional and social impacts on her life.

Store operator Wilbridge Securities pleaded guilty to the charge of failure of supervision brought about by Worksafe.

The franchisee was ordered to pay a fine of $45,000 with costs of $20,000, but no conviction was recorded.

Re: McDonald’s Employee Falling into an Open Bucket of Boiling Oil

Used to drain the oil just like that when I worked in a restaurant. Totally not her fault, I feel sorry for her.

Re: McDonald’s Employee Falling into an Open Bucket of Boiling Oil

i see how she fell etc. but what exactly was she trying to do? She looked to be tossing something in the oil? Either way, raised rubber mats with holes in them would have prevented this. It never made sense to me to have slick ass floors in a kitchen. You clean and clean and clean anyway so whats the problem with throwing down some rubber mats? And cleaning them too. Better yet, have two sets, one to be drying after being washed the day before and one to be using.

Re: McDonald’s Employee Falling into an Open Bucket of Boiling Oil

I worked at McDonalds 20 years ago. Even way back then, the way those vats were cleaned included a sealed container the old grease would be drained into and then transported out to the bin to be recycled. Even back then, this could have never happened at the restaurant I worked at. This is the management of that McDonalds for not having the correct equipment.

Re: McDonald’s Employee Falling into an Open Bucket of Boiling Oil

That's it?

For some reason I was expecting something DR-esque like the lady falling into a huge vat of boiling oil.
