Mayday, Mayday, 6 Killed when Dry Cargo Ship Splits in Two
The Palau-flagged dry cargo ship named "Arvin", 114 meters long, 14 meters wide, carrying cargo from Georgia to Bulgaria, started receiving water at noon, 200 meters off Bartın. The 46-year-old ship, trying to take shelter in Bartın Harbor, split into two because of the waves. It was seen that 3 ships around the sinking ship could not reach the region due to strong waves. The crew of 12, two of them Russians, and a Ukrainian citizen, got on the lifeboats at the last moment to save their lives. 6 of the sailors were rescued alive. Bartın Governor Sinan Güner said, “Unfortunately, the bodies of two of the other 6 crew members were seen at sea. There is a report that the other 4 crew members are also lying motionless on the rocks. We are trying to reach them as well. “Our assessment is 6 survivors and 6 deaths”. |

Too bad the video ended long before the audio. You can see in the last pics of the bridge that they are putting on exposure suits. Looks like they should have been able to launch lifeboats in that sea. It's smooth swells and no whitecaps. Wonder what happened after the video picture ended.

There is another video on "Sea News" that was taken from a ship about a half a mile away. They cover the breakup, but didn't film long enough to cover the sinking.

Thanks, Kelly! I wish I knew how to lift and transfer videos. I swear to God that the guys who videoed this, are the same ones that record the ground when someone is jumping, and are focused on the sky when cars are crashing. They stop JUST AS SOON AS SOMETHING INTERESTING IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN! "Ship is sinking?!?!? OH! Let me take a picture of the ship, and then go down to my cabin to check my calendar and see what today's date is!" |
