Footage has emerged of the moment a US pilot on the run for his girlfriend's murder stole a passenger jet and crashed it into an airport terminal building.
Murder suspect Brian Hedglin's botched rampage began when he scaled the airport's razor-wire fence, using a rug and rubber gloves, and broke into the cockpit of a Canadair Regional Jet 200.
The attempted hijacking unfolded at St George Airport in Utah shortly before 1am on July 17.
Surveillance video released by police shows the destruction the SkyWest Airlines pilot caused once he started the engine.
The plane is seen bumping up and down as it clips the side of a terminal building and then tears through a car park, knocking down street lamps, a security fence and trees before slamming into a building near a car rental lot.
Police said 14 cars were damaged.
Hedglin's girlfriend, Christina Cornego, 39, had been found stabbed to death in the couple's home just days earlier.
A police report said Hedglin, 40, had a bandage covering what looked like a stab wound on the right side of his chest and a bruise on the left side of his back, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
After crashing into the terminal and cars, Hedglin is believed to have taken his own life inside the plane. A pistol was found near his body. A police report describing the scene said: "The jet engines were still running and several cars were piled up under the plane's wings."
Cornejo and Hedglin dated for four years but he had been abusive.
She reportedly had a restraining order against him at the time of her death.
