A West Palm Beach man is jailed on multiple DUI-related charges following a crash involving a Miami-Dade police cruiser, among other vehicles.

The crash happened shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday along Southwest Eighth Street and 32nd Avenue.

According to Miami-Dade police, the crash that ultimately involved six vehicles began when David Merini, 33, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu east on Southwest Eighth Street and he lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic.

A chain reaction began after Merini's car hit a Honda Element which was then pushed into the Miami-Dade police car, investigators said. Merini's Malibu ended up on it side.

Police said the Honda driver, Julio Aira, was taken to a hospital to be evaluated while the officer driving the cruiser was taken to be treated for a hand and wrist injury, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Merini, of West Palm Beach. was booked into a Miami-Dade jail on eight counts of DUI with damage and one count of reckless driving and was being held on a bond of $9,500, according to jail records.
