A pickup truck driver involved in a fatal crash in Bangkok is being investigated for manslaughter and reckless driving after video evidence contradicted his statement to police. The pickup truck-motorcycle accident happened on Wednesday, a rainy morning in Bangkok, in Tha Phra tunnel. The 28-year-old biker, identified as Virasak Horthong, died from head injuries sustained in the crash. The pickup driver, Somsong Wanthamat, 37, told police he was heading to a school in Samphanthawong district to deliver bread when the accident occurred. "I was driving in the same lane as the biker, who was in front of me. The biker lost control of his machine and I hit the brakes, but the road was slippery," he told police. Pol Capt Vichane said a Mr Somwong's breath-alcohol test returned a reading of 147mg, well over the legal driving limit of 50mg. He was initially charged with drink driving while police checked for CCTV footage and questioned witnesses before laying any further charges against him. However, some people were also critical of the motorcyclist, pointing out that traffic regulations banned them from using the tunnel. |
