At Least 12 Injured when Pyrotechnics Festivities Go Wrong in Mexico
At least 12 people have been severely injured after a massive explosion tore through a patron saint festival in Mexico. The incident occurred when festive pyrotechnics accidentally triggered a chain reaction of exploding LP gas tanks. The blast occurred on the evening of May 14 near a local community church where hundreds had gathered for a traditional patron saint celebration. According many witnesses, the panic began during the use of toritos and buscapiés—traditional fireworks designed to dart erratically across the ground. One of these low-flying fireworks veered off course, crashing directly into an outdoor street-food vendor stall. The stray sparks immediately ignited hot cooking oil and reached a cluster of portable LP gas cylinders. The force of the explosion completely leveled the makeshift vendor stands and sent crowds of people running for cover in the dark. Medical responders treated at least 12 victims for severe, life-threatening blast injuries and major burns. First responders spent hours cooling down and securing other exposed gas cylinders to prevent a secondary disaster. |
