Janet Genao Killed in Chain-reaction Crash by DUI Driver

The driver of a pickup moving fast in morning traffic on the 15 Freeway caused a six-vehicle, chain-reaction crash Tuesday that killed Janet Genao, a Murrieta woman and sent another pickup off the roadway and into the side of the Temecula City Hall parking building.

The pickup’s driver, identified as Javier Caldera, 25, of Auburn, Washington, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, the California Highway Patrol said. He was not injured.

Caldera was arrested on suspicion of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in property damage, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

He was booked into the Southwest Detention center with a bail of $1 million, and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning.

The wreckage debris closed the southbound lanes of the freeway at Rancho California Road, as well as the road’s on-ramp, for four hours after the 7:25 a.m. crash and caused major traffic jams throughout the area.

A dashcam video shows the crash, with the truck speeding by and rear-ending the first car in the chain with an impact that looked like an explosion. The comment, “That’s crazy….call 911, man” can be heard from inside the car with the video.

The CHP said early Tuesday that a 44-year-old Murrieta woman, the driver of a Nissan Altima that Caldera’s southbound truck hit first, died after the collision. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office later identified her as Janet Genao.

In the collisions that followed, a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck flew off the freeway and struck the Temecula City Hall parking building. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Wildomar, was hospitalized with major injuries, the CHP said.

Two others, a 35-year-old man from Brandon, Mississippi driving a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 55-year-old man from Irvine in a 2017 Tesla Model S, both had minor injuries. A 50-year-old El Cajon man in a 2017 Toyota Camry escaped being hurt.

You can see the pick up’s driver stagger across the dividing median and lay down by the side of oncoming traffic as soon as the vehicle taking the video pulls up to the scene. He’s lucky this wasn’t in a third world country or they would have beat him to death instead of offering aid.

When I saw the picture I thought the car had either been stuck under a big rig or the roof had been cut off. No, he was just going so fucking fast that the car was obliterated. Hope he dies in prison.

Re: Janet Genao Killed in Chain-reaction Crash by DUI Driver

The man accused of causing the collision in Temecula this week that killed a Murrieta woman was charged Thursday, June 6, with second-degree murder.

Javier Caldera, 25, of Auburn, Washington was also charged with driving under the influence of drugs causing injury and hit and run causing property damage. The DUI count carries a sentencing enhancement of causing great bodily injury.

Caldera was in court Thursday at Southwest Justice Center in French Valley, where he was scheduled to enter a plea. But his attorney from the Riverside County Public Defender’s Office requested a postponement, and the hearing was rescheduled for June 18.

Deputy District Attorney Allison Pace persuaded Superior Court Judge Stephen J. Gallon to revoke Caldera’s $1 million bail out of fear that if freed Caldera might flee or drive a vehicle. He told investigators that he was headed to Mexico at the time of the 7:15 a.m. crash that killed Janet Genao, 44, and injured three others, District Attorney’s Office spokesman John Hall said.

Pace told the judge that Caldera had been driving on a suspended license since 2013. Hall said Caldera’s convictions in Washington state, including driving under the influence and felony evading, influenced the DA’s Office to file the murder charge. A filing of a first-degree murder charge would have required the DA to establish that Caldera intended to kill.

“This is someone who is an extreme danger to our community,” Pace told the judge.

Gallon cited Caldera’s criminal record in agreeing that the defendant be held without bail.

Caldera could face life in prison if convicted as currently charged, Hall said.

What a POS. We’ll pay for his 3-hots and a cot for the next (20) years while the families of the victims do the real suffering.

This is an extremely sad story. You can see them all look at the car and what was left of the car and her and just think ‘what the fuck’.
