NEW HAVEN, Mo. Sat. Oct 29 2 AM. An off-duty New Haven police officer spotted the vehicle stranded on the tracks east of Olive Street, with its wheels stuck between the tracks.
But his concern quickly turned to alarm, when he noticed that the driver and her one month old baby were still inside.
The officer — who said he noticed a strong smell of alcohol on the woman’s breath — called for back up and police worked fast to removed the pair from the car.
They next tried to alert the railroad to the blocked tracks — but the call came too late to stop a westbound freight train from smashing the vehicle.
The collision — with the sound of the crying baby in the background — was caught on tape.
The mother reportedly failed a field sobriety test – her name is being withheld pending formal charges.
