17 injured, 1 critical maybe she is the Argentine "Carrie", wastes the classmates that ridiculed her with a "volcano" loaded with fiberglass (no xrays) and steel shrapnel. I would post Peter Brady's volatile volcano, but I have to pick up my car before they close... edit - they're open til 5, here you go: |

Re: Girl Made a Working Model of a Volcano for a Science Fair
The detonation occurred during an experimental demonstration that simulated the eruption of a volcano. A combination of sulfur, coal and a special salt caused injuries to students and adults. The consequences of an accidental explosion during a science fair at the Rancagua Commercial Institute, in Pergamino, left this city in Buenos Aires in the interior in a state of alarm. The incident, which occurred last night, had more than a dozen injured, most of them minors. The most committed is a 10-year-old student at risk of losing one of her eyes who was rushed this morning to Garrahan Hospital, with a facial trauma and several burns. According to local media, the girl responded well to the transfer and around 8 a.m. she was received by an interdisciplinary team of operating theatre ophthalmological surgeons, neurosurgeons and neurologists. The explosion occurred during the demonstration of an experiment that simulated the eruption of a volcano. A video recorded at the scene shows how, in a matter of seconds, the situation got out of control: a violent boom, comparable to that of a pyrotechnics artifact or a home bomb, scattered fragments of metal and remnants of the material like shrapnel, reaching numerous attendees. |

If the 'special salt' was saltpeter, that's kind of the recipe for gun/black powder, yeah? Also, aren't the active ingredients for such a school demo-level volcan, usually just vinegar and baking soda?

Yes, if you are NOT Peter Brady, and you loaded it with green goop. And if you are NOT a homicidal Argentinian schoolgirl, moody and goth and upset with your classmates. But other than that, yeah, baking soda and vinegar, and some red food coloring to make it look like it's molten lava. |
