Gas Tanker Explodes on Italian Highway
“A disaster.” This is how the rescuers described the scene on the A1 highway heading towards Naples, after a gas tanker explosion. The exact picture of what happened is depicted by the scattered debris of the exploded vehicle in front of dozens of motorists and travelers. Parts of the bodywork were found (not all) scattered even in nearby fields. Fortunately, the area had been evacuated in time thanks to the intervention of three off-duty firefighters returning from Palermo, who, upon seeing the flames, alerted their colleagues and evacuated the area, including the two rest areas. A heroic act that likely saved lives and prevented worse outcomes: thankfully, no injuries were reported. The highway was closed to traffic in both directions for hours, from Caianello to Capua. Only shortly after 7 PM was the northbound section reopened, while the southbound lane saw a ten-kilometer traffic jam. It wasn't until a few minutes after 9 PM that a lane was created within the service station to allow a detour for blocked vehicles. The highway crossing Italy was thus blocked on the day before Christmas Eve when many are returning home or going on vacation. It all happened 45 minutes after 5 PM yesterday. Two vehicles, a gas tanker and a truck carrying cars, collided on an access ramp to a service area. The two drivers, in shock from the incident, were interviewed by the police. Their accounts now need to be compared to verify responsibilities, and technical examinations are required on the safety conditions of the vehicles they were driving. A video circulated online shows the tanker in flames and then the explosive blast. According to the highway patrol, in addition to damage to the two service areas and nearby vehicles, there was also damage to some surrounding homes. The explosion was very powerful. Families stayed home last night, but further assessments by the fire brigade will take place today. |
