Obviously you are not a pilot. When a plane has a failure, you could very well loose all flight controls with nothing left to do but eject or bail out. I'm not saying that is the case here but it is not always possible to do much with a dead stick!
Just ask cheating wives - when you have a dead stick, you bail out!
