Hundreds of spectators looked on in terror as a professional circus performer fell several feet to the floor when a dangerous stunt went horribly wrong.

The woman and a man were performing a high-wire act in front of an audience filled with families at the travelling Circo Hermanos Vazquez in Houston, Texas.

She was supposed to hang from her hair as the acrobats went in circles high above the floor, but a mishap caused her to crash to the ground.

Footage shot by an audience member shows the performers spinning in circles at considerable speed as they hang upside down from a replica of a space rocket, which is suspended from the ceiling by a wire.

They perform a few manoeuvres before they move on to the featured stunt, which sees the woman hang from her hair while attached to a contraption held by the man.

The crowd immediately senses the stunt has gone awry, as the screams of horrified woman and children drown out the music blaring throughout the arena.

The shocked man who shot the video screams ‘Holy shit’ as he zooms out to show a wider shot of the circus floor as circus officials quickly rush to the woman’s aid.

The woman reportedly escaped with just minor injuries after the incident at last Tuesday’s event.

When an injury in the circus happens, the clowns are supposed to flood out to distract the audience from the people handling the injury. There's a song that is usually played that is a signal to the clowns backstage that something has happened, and that they need to come out immediately.
