An Austin man is thankful to be alive after surveillance video captured a teenage driver running him over while he crossed a parking lot in his electric wheelchair.

The crash happened on Saturday, Sept. 3 which left R. De L. with serious, life-threatening injuries.

"Yesterday, I saw the video and I thank god,"he told.

He said he feels blessed to still be alive after a teenage driver ran him over with a truck.

"As far as I remember, I went through the parking area of La Michoacana and now I don't remember until I saw the video," he said.

Surveillance video showed him crossing the parking lot at a shopping plaza off North Lamar Blvd and Rundberg Lane in North Austin when he noticed a truck driving recklessly. He signaled for the driver to slow down but the truck instead drove over him.

“It happened so fast. The fire truck was right there as it happened. He ended up taking the wheelchair underneath his truck going around the sidewalk trying to get the wheelchair off and then he just fled the scene," an eyewitness said who wanted to remain anonymous.

He went to the hospital where he received stitches. His body was left covered in scrapes and he has pain in his knees and hips.

He said he didn't want to go to the hospital at first because he didn't have the money to pay for it. He's originally from Mexico and after this incident, he's planning to move back. He was involved in another hit-and-run last in August in the same area. That driver still hasn’t been found.

“It’s terrible. It looks to me as if he intentionally ran him over," said a man who owns a business nearby.

He often sees the victim around selling sweets in front of La Michoacana.

“It’s like he swerved into the guy and the question is what are they going to do about it?” he said.

17-year-old P. A. A.-B. was arrested and faces charges of failing to stop and render aid, injury to a disabled person, and unlawful carry of a weapon.

The victim said he wishes the driver no harm, but wants him to be held accountable for his actions.

“I thought he was dead. I don’t know how he survived it," the business owner said.

The victim is now without the electric wheelchair that his family bought for him to get around.
