Dump Truck Pulling a Trailer Carrying an Excavator Breaks Free
A dump truck pulling a trailer was traveling south on Courthouse Road in Chesterfield County, Virginia when the driver applied the brakes for a red light. The dump truck's rear wheels locked up, causing the truck and trailer to jackknife. The trailer then broke free, crossed the median into oncoming traffic and slammed directly into a Chesterfield Fire and EMS engine (Engine 220). The fire engine was stopped at the time, waiting to turn right out of Fire Station 20 to respond to a emergency fire call. Investigators confirmed the trailer's emergency breakaway brake system was not connected to the dump truck, which prevented the trailer from automatically braking when it detached. The mandatory Virginia state safety inspections on both the dump truck and the trailer had already expired. The driver was charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control of a vehicle, and two counts of expired state inspection. No injuries were reported to the firefighters or the driver. |
