A Boston driver survived a startling crash that saw his car launch from the upper deck of Interstate 93 through a light pole, an exit sign and a fence before landing on the lower deck of the highway below.
The 2006 Toyota Tacoma driven by Vannak Sao, 33, of East Boston, fell from the northbound side of the highway to the southbound side below.
The fall was captured by MassDOT surveillance cameras.
Sao, who was charged by Massachusetts State police with drunken driving, had to be extricated from the truck by Boston and Somerville firefighters.
He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
The truck severely damaged the light pole, the sign indicating the exit to Route 1 north, its post and six lengths of chain link fence.
Sao has been cited for speeding five times and has been at fault in two crashes.
“I know the truck is totaled, but I’m glad he’s still alive,” Vanny Sao, the driver’s father said.
“He said he probably fall asleep or something and hit the snowbank or slip and slide. I’m not sure yet.”
