A man is charged with drunk driving after a destructive four-vehicle crash that miraculously caused only minor injuries.

Among those who escaped serious injury Saturday was a man ejected from a pickup truck that ended up being destroyed. Windsor police wouldn’t say Sunday if he was the man who was later charged with drunk driving.

“I can’t believe he’s alive,” said Patrick Webb, who came across the crash scene when he took his car to get an oil change at the Lube Plus.

The collision, involving a minivan, a full-size commercial van, a pickup truck and a crossover SUV, happened around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on County Road 42 in front of the airport.

Windsor police Staff Sgt. Ron LeClair said Sunday a man has been charged with impaired driving. The person’s name and age have not been released. Police were still investigating Sunday and LeClair didn’t know if other charges were likely.

The road was closed in both directions late into the night Saturday while accident reconstruction officers combed through the crash site.

Three people were taken to hospital. Three more people were treated at the scene.

Police said everyone involved suffered only minor injuries, including the man who was ejected from a pickup truck.

After looking at the crumpled truck, Webb said the man could have died if he hadn’t been ejected. The pickup truck was reduced to a crumpled pile of metal.

The other vehicles, which also remained at the scene as it grew dark Saturday, had varying degrees of damage including collapsed frames, crushed front ends and ripped off roofs.

There was a grey van on the north edge of the road, facing west, with damage on one side. There were three vehicles on the south side of County Road 42, including a commercial van with front-end damage that was facing east. It came to rest near the crumpled truck. The black SUV was also at the side of the road. Its roof was gone.

Webb said he saw emergency workers trying to get people out of the SUV in front of the Lube Plus when he arrived.

“It looked like an elderly couple were trapped inside so they were using the Jaws of Life to release them from the vehicle,” he said. “It looked like they were working really diligently to get them out.”
