10 bucks says he won't fall asleep driving again. If he's still alive, that is.

easily done.. specially with American roads. The roads are straight with the odd few corner here there - boredom and then the sleep drifts kick in.

Not to say it doesn't happen on UK roads BUT you're more on edge because of twist and turns and 9 times out of 10 its either - twats texting/using phones while driving or just a bone idle sub-human being behind the wheel of a killing machine.

Apparently you don't drive very often... especially long road trips at night. It happens.

Re: Driver Falls Asleep Behind The Wheel

I still can't fathom how people fall asleep at the wheel...
Happened once and only once to me. I was working 2 jobs, one of them was delivering newspapers. And this is the real deal delivering, where it's a lot of manual labor and delivering to 200+ residences every day. So this one day, I finished my route and finally was driving home. Got on the highway, 4/5 am, pretty deserted still. My eyes closed and then my eyes opened...I woke up and my car was just about to smash into the right side barrier wall. I didn't over correct myself, but I just straightened out a bit and my car was safe.

I remember actually feeling like I was sleeping, like I was in bed asleep, it was only for just a few seconds I guess. But those few seconds could have been costly and possibly deadly for me.

After that, any time I felt sleepy while delivering or when driving home, I'd pull into a parking lot and take a 15-30 minute nap. Never again did I ever want to experience that. When I make long road trips, I stop every 2-3 hours to break, rest, nap, stretch, eat, bathroom run.

I always tell everyone who might need to drive for hours that they should take breaks every few hours no matter what. And even if it is just driving home from work or school, if you feel sleepy, pull into a parking lot and catch a few minutes of rest.

Life is too precious and being safer while operating vehicles is one of the easier ways to keep everyone on the road safe.
