Discarded Oxygen Tank Causes Explosion in Garbage Truck
An improperly discarded oxygen tank caused an explosion inside a garbage truck in Whitehall, Ohio. The city of Whitehall on Thursday shared a video of the explosion, which occurred on the 4000 Block of Elbern Avenue. The video shows two Local Waste Services employees overturning residential trash bins into the back of a garbage truck. The second worker empties a trash bin into the truck and is preparing to empty a second bin when the explosion sends debris flying at him as he quickly covers his head and tries to get away. City officials said the explosion was caused by “an oxygen tank that was illegally placed in a garbage can.” |

Re: Discarded Oxygen Tank Causes Explosion in Garbage Truck
Don't those trucks have a compactor? I think the explosion here is a "breach of pressure vessel causing shit to fly everywhere" rather than "something caught fire and exploded". Poor guy got a garbage facial. I love how they left in the part where he runs around saying "shit shit shit" etc! |

Re: Discarded Oxygen Tank Causes Explosion in Garbage Truck
Damn, the next thing you know they'll make it illegal for me to discard my old ammo, grenades, and claymores... BTW, pure oxygen is highly explosive. Just a spark can set it off. I've been searching for video of this recent hyperbaric chamber explosion in Michigan.

Re: Discarded Oxygen Tank Causes Explosion in Garbage Truck
Just for the sake of accuracy or whatever might come of someone reading this, oxygen isn’t combustible, it’s an extremely reactive oxidizer. It doesn’t burn, it makes other things burn, violently. It also reduces the ignition temperature for most things and some can even self ignite. And when I say it makes things burn that includes things that don’t normally burn, things like steel. Basically anything that can oxidize but hasn’t yet, like iron or carbon (steel)
