A crane has caught fire and collapsed at a construction site on St Kilda Road near the corner of Moubray Street in Melbourne.

At least 13 fire trucks from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) were called in to fight the blaze, understood to have been sparked by an electrical fire in a motor at the base of the crane.

The fire had spread, causing the arm of the crane to collapse and fall to the ground below.


It crashed on to the street damaging several cars.

There may be more damage on the construction site as well but fire crews have not been able to get to the area.

Firefighters went up in the bucket of a nearby smaller crane to make sure the fire was out and are working on a plan to safely dismantle the crane without causing any further damage.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.

An MFB spokeswoman said there were no injuries.

Good thing no one was hurt, that is potentially very dangerous.

The fire must have burned through the cables, or burned up the brakes. You can see the support cables go slack just before it starts to fall.

I'd hate to be an operator when something like this happens, how the hell would you evacuate when you have all those ladders to climb down lol
