That guy is CERTAINLY dead.
I use nitric acid by the quart for re-silvering glass headlight lenses. Just in those tiny amounts that stuff is EXTREMELY NASTY. I handle even small amounts with extreme care. If this was Fuming Red Nitric acid, (which is what it looks like to me) you are talking ROCKET FUEL, that is hypergolic. Probably there was some contamination in the tanker, and this reaction is the result. It was probably fine when he drove away from the chemical plant, but was probably already lighting off, and the chemical reaction started really roaring by the time he got to that intersection. If that was MY truck, as soon as I saw the red plume, I would have started running.

There was a Nitric Acid spill after a truck wreck in Tucson a few months ago, and I-10 was closed for 4-5 days while they pumped out the tanker truck, cleared the wreckage, and decontaminated the area. The driver died.

They will be lucky if they even find any remains of this guy. Even his teeth will dissolve in that stuff.

After watching this vid a few times, it appears to me that he had TWO different chemical loads in that truck. I think there must have been a leak between adjacent tanks.

Usually chemical tanks are lined with glass. But if they dented the side of the truck a few times, or there was damage to the nitric acid section, then it probably ate through into the next tank compartment. What you see at the end is SOME OTHER chemical shooting out through it's relief valve, from a tank BEHIND the nitric acid section tank. It must have been some low-reactive chemical, or there would have been a huge explosion. This was just like Mentos and Coca-Cola.
