I don't think the trucker had any choice about getting smacked from behind... but he definitely seemed to steer into the crash barrier after the fact to slow down the coach

Did well to slow down an additional 25+ tonnes of vehicle and passengers there

Watch it again, it's great. Very interesting what a good director can do with nothing but a car and an articulated lorry and a few simple characters.

The truck is of course a character in its own right. I remember reading yonks ago how the production team used to put on the scars and dirt every morning before filming began and called it its makeup.

Yeah, I have a memory of it being a great film.

It was an adaptation from Stephen King, wasn't it ? It often helps to make a nice movie

I agree the truck-character thing is nuts, something I didn't remember (but from what I read on the movie page, it may be because of the dubbing) is the truck "screaming" when it falls into the void at the end. The anthropomorphism is cranked up to 11 and, besides Daisy or whatever that New Beetle is named, it hasn't really been done again as far as I know. There's arguably Kit, but it's not quite the same.

You're right, it's the Godzilla anger / attack scream, when the trailer rolls over in the canyon. I actually had no idea it was the Godzilla noise until many years later, when I was watching a redlettermedia video about something totally unrelated. I honestly just thought it was an over-the-top stressed metal sound effect but it's so obvious watching it now

Anyway we really must stop talking about Duel now as I can sense the attention of the mods slowly reaching consensus that our conversation should be in the WC as we are way off topic
