Mark Fisher, 25, was rushed to hospital after the bike collided with him as he ran across a zebra crossing hours before England's 0-0 draw against Costa Rica.

Against the odds, he survived with only a broken arm, a damaged tooth, and various cuts and bruises.

Police are investigating the hit-and-run using CCTV cameras around the scene, and from a fragment of the bike left at the scene.

According to witnesses, Mr Fisher left his hotel in Belo Horizonte, located only a few meters away, moments before being knocked over.

A local police chief said: “We have got parts of the motorbike and other information that could lead us to identify the motorcyclist.

“We urge this person to hand himself in so he’s got a chance of avoiding immediate incarceration.”

The incident has meant Mr Fisher missed England's final match at this year's World Cup.

After losing 2-1 to both Italy and Uruguay in their opening two games, Roy Hodgson's footballers are heading home, disappointing the 10,000 estimated fans that travelled to Brazil for the event.
