A sleeper bus was traveling north along National Highway 1 and when it entered an intersection, it struck a 50cc motorcycle, which was crossing the intersection from east to west in the dark.

Following the initial impact, the bus driver sharply swerves to the side, causing the heavy coach to smash into a parked taxi, tearing down a metal traffic light pole and flips entirely onto its side across the central traffic island. The crash caused severe structural damage to all 3 vehicles.

The bus was carrying 13–16 passengers from Ho Chi Minh City back to Hoài Nhơn and was driven by 36-year-old N.V.C. The bike was driven by 63-year-old N.Đ.P.

As a result the 63 year old biker died along with a 60 year old female passenger.

According to the traffic police, the preliminary cause was attributed to driver negligence. The bus driver failed to observe oncoming traffic safely while approaching the busy junction.

Visual limits and slick asphalt from heavy seasonal rains also contributed to the hazard. Toxicology screens confirmed that none of the drivers had alcohol or illegal narcotics in their systems at the time of the crash.

The police department detained the bus driver under charges of violating road safety laws while a formal prosecution is built.
