A “360-degree” ride in Saudi Arabia broke in half while people were riding it.

At least 23 people were injured

The debris reportedly struck individuals standing on the opposite side of the ride, adding to the number of injuries. Several people were thrown from the seats during the malfunction, while others suffered injuries from the force of impact as the ride hit the ground.

The most serious injury reported so for is a leg amputation.

The cause looks clear to me. The wall of the main structural support "pipe" was too weak and the ride's forces ripped the pipe wall clean off. The footage shows the entire wall section is gone.

Likely causes:

• The design engineer needed to spec a much thicker "pipe" wall.
• Improper specs such as the materials of construction, tensile strength, fatigue resistance, material testing requirements, etc.
• Improper material substitutions by the mfgr/builder and/or incomplete shop drawing reviews, and/or failure of owner/builder to pay for shop drawing reviews by the design engineer.
